SecBoard-Einordnung

Beschreibung

Improper neutralization of special elements used in a command ('command injection') in Windows Shell allows an unauthorized attacker to bypass a security feature over a network.

Erkennung & Indikatoren

Ausnutzung

Aktiv ausgenutzt (CISA KEV). Microsoft confirmed that CVE-2026-96951, a Windows Shell security feature bypass, is being exploited in the wild. CISA also warned federal agencies about its active exploitation. Attackers send specially crafted files to victims, who must be convinced to open them, for example, by clicking a malicious link or opening an attachment.

Threat-Hunting-Queries

Detect attempts to bypass Mark-of-the-Web (MotW) security features, especially when files originating from the internet execute without expected warnings. Focus on process creation events where internet-downloaded files (e.g., from browser download folders, email attachments) launch unexpected child processes or execute without MotW tags.
